Omaha, Nebraska — Haunted Houses & Ghost Stories

The history

Omaha's haunted ground, in the framing of its own ghost-tour operator, is a river city's layered past. US Ghost Adventures' Omaha page puts it this way: situated along the Missouri River, Omaha grew from trading posts and frontier settlements into booming industries and bustling entertainment districts, and over the decades witnessed fierce political battles, notorious crime figures, public scandals, unsolved mysteries and moments of violence that shaped its identity. Stories connected to former hospitals, historic businesses, forgotten tunnels, parks and neighbourhoods, the operator says, have been passed down for generations. The walk its tour makes of that past is specified on the same page: a one-hour, one-mile route through the downtown historic district and the Old Market's cobblestone streets and 19th-century brick warehouses, meeting at The Arch at Gene Leahy Mall, visiting six or more locations, and concluding at the Skinner Macaroni Lofts.

The downtown anchor of that route is a museum with a documented founding of its own. The Museum of Shadows' About page records that Nate Raterman founded a small paranormal team in 2006, after his first encounter with the paranormal, and began receiving donated items from around the world that had reported paranormal activity or some sort of spiritual attachment; he founded Museum of Shadows INC in 2016 in Omaha, Nebraska, with a Pensacola, Florida expansion in 2024. The museum's homepage dates itself "EST 10/10/2016" and gives its Omaha address as 1110 Douglas St. Its building is identified in an events listing collected in search as the Spect Building, from 1884, in Omaha's Historic Downtown Old Market — the museum's own FAQ notes, without dating the building, that the tour is not entirely handicap accessible "due to age of the building" and that there are stairs on the route.

Omaha's newest haunt has the opposite kind of record: no history claimed at all. Dungeon of the Damned's own site announces a seasonal run from September 25th to October 31st in a basement labyrinth at 1209 Jackson Street — underneath Hollywood Candy at 12th & Jackson, on its directory listing's description — and presents itself entirely as a built attraction. Between the museum's 2016 founding, the tour operator's frontier-to-crime-boss spine, and a basement haunt that claims nothing older than its own sets, Omaha's documented record is unusually honest about which parts are history and which are staging.

The legend

This section is folklore — reported by the museum, the tour operator and the accounts cited, and never asserted as fact here.

The Museum of Shadows' haunting is reported by the museum itself, in aggregate rather than in named ghosts. Its homepage states that visitors "have reported being physically touched, seeing apparitions, hearing disembodied voices, children laughing, running and much more," and that "poltergeist activity has been caught and verified through our security cameras as well." The Courier Nebraska account collected in search repeats the same catalogue from the museum's website — visitors physically touched, apparitions, disembodied voices, children laughing and running — and adds the museum's framing of its collection: more than 5,000 items, split between the Omaha location and a second location in Florida, each artifact carrying the haunted history its donor reported. No individual named spirit for the Omaha museum appears in any source collected, and none is invented here: on the museum's own telling, the haunting belongs to the objects, not to the building's past occupants.

Omaha Ghosts' repertoire is published by the operator on its own tour page, location by location. Hummel Park is "known as one of Nebraska's most infamous locations," linked to "generations of unsettling stories involving mysterious figures, unexplained sounds, forgotten burials, and the legendary Devil's Steps hidden among its wooded grounds." O'Connor's Pub, a longtime Old Market gathering place, "became known for reports of footsteps, moving objects, shadowy figures, and mysterious voices," with multiple investigations documenting unusual activity, on the operator's account. The Museum of Shadows appears on the route as a place that "has earned a reputation for strange occurrences, unexplained activity, and visitor experiences that continue to spark curiosity and debate."

Its own site's language is the language of a staged attraction — a labyrinth, sets, actors and scares — and it is presented on exactly those terms.

Attraction stories

Museum of Shadows

The Museum of Shadows is a museum of other places' hauntings, assembled in downtown Omaha. Its own site describes the offer in full: over 5,000 verified haunted artifacts, in the museum's words, donated from across the United States and multiple countries; a collection it calls the world's largest of its kind, in a museum "voted one of the most haunted museums in the world" and, in its homepage banner, "VOTED THE MOST HAUNTED MUSEUM IN THE WORLD" — both superlatives are the museum's own, and are carried here as its claims. Its founder and curator, Nate Raterman, is presented on the same page as a professional investigator and specialist in demonology who has spent 22+ years investigating cases of the unknown; its About page adds his 2006 paranormal team, the stream of donated items that followed, the 2016 Omaha founding and the 2024 Pensacola expansion, and guest appearances on Travel Channel, Discovery, A&E Bio Channel, National Geographic and Destination America. The museum also works the other side of the counter, on its homepage's account: people dealing with a volatile haunted object can have it removed free of charge, with safe containment and a strict quarantine process, and the artifact may end up in the permanent display. The visitor experience is specified by its own FAQ: self-guided daytime tours, no reservations, no photos, audio, video or live streaming inside, a signed waiver for everyone touring, one to three hours on average with no time limit, spirit boxes, K2 meters, ghost meters and dowsing rods available to rent, the Sit Challenge room always available at $10.00 on top of the $25.00 admission, and ghost hunts led by the founder with top-of-the-line equipment. The reported phenomena — being touched, apparitions, disembodied voices, children laughing and running, poltergeist activity the museum says its security cameras have caught — are set out in The legend above, attributed in full to the museum. What Omaha has here, on the documented record, is not a haunted house in the old sense but a warehouse of reported hauntings under one 1884 roof, curated by the investigator who collected them.
