Haunted Savannah, GA

The history

Savannah's haunted map, as its own tour operators document it, is drawn in three kinds of places: cemeteries, mansions, and the working riverfront. Ghosts & Gravestones, which runs the city's "Trolley of the Doomed," describes a route past ancient cemeteries — "those still standing and those that have fallen victim to the passage of time and progress" — antebellum mansions, and squares shaded by live oaks. A city that has buried some of its dead under its own growth has, at minimum, a documented reason for an unsettled relationship with them.

Two buildings anchor the documented side of the story. The Andrew Low House, as Ghosts & Gravestones describes it, is a mansion designed by John Norris combining Grecian and Italian Villa elements, with one of Savannah's most stunning ironwork balconies. On River Street stands Perkins and Sons Ship Chandlery, which the same operator calls "a testament to the bustling port business that once took place right at its doorstep" — a working chandlery from the era when River Street's warehouses served the port. These are real buildings with real working pasts, and both now open their doors at night, exclusively, to one tour.

The third anchor is an inn. The 17Hundred90 Inn takes its name and its identity from its era, and Spooky Savannah Ghost Tours uses it as a meeting point — a choice that only makes sense because of the story attached to the building, told in the legend section below.

The chandlery deserves one more line of documented context, because it is where the city's working past is most tangible. A ship chandlery supplied the port's vessels, and Ghosts & Gravestones describes the Perkins and Sons building as an antiquated survival from that trade: stepping inside, its guests are told, is stepping into another time, surrounded by the dark tales of River Street's past. The building's documented life was rope, sail and provision; the tales are what the night adds to it.

Savannah's haunters also point to its battlegrounds. Ghosts & Gravestones' route drives by "the sites of some of the bloodiest battlegrounds in history," in the operator's own phrasing — a claim this page repeats as the operator's framing of its route, not as a verified ranking. What is solid ground is the pattern: a port city of cemeteries, antebellum houses and a hard old riverfront has accumulated more documented death, and more buildings that survived it, than most American cities its size.

The legend

Folklore, clearly labelled: local legend holds that spirits inhabit the Andrew Low House. Ghosts & Gravestones reports that staff have long told of apparitions dressed in old-fashioned clothes and of furniture moving with no one near it, combined with more recent accounts from the house's own docents. Reported — not verified, and presented here as reported.

The 17Hundred90 Inn carries Savannah's best-known inn legend. As the inn's Wikipedia entry recounts it — and Wikipedia is a lead, not a primary source, so this is hedged accordingly — Anna Powers is said to have jumped from a window of the inn to her death after a quarrel with her sailor love, and her ghost is reportedly still said to haunt the property. Tour guides tell the story; the documentation for it is thin, and the legend label is where it belongs.

The city's operators lean into the superlative: Ghosts & Gravestones calls Savannah "America's Most Ghostly City," and The Haunted Savannah calls it "America's most haunted city." Those are marketing claims by the businesses that sell the tours, repeated here as claims — the documented buildings underneath them are the verifiable part.

Ghosts & Gravestones Savannah

Ghosts & Gravestones runs Savannah's "Trolley of the Doomed": a night ride through the historic district with a costumed Ghost Host, past the ancient cemeteries, antebellum mansions and oak-draped squares the company's own tour page describes. What sets this listing apart, per that page, is access: the company says its guests get exclusive nighttime entry into two of Savannah's most haunted venues — the Andrew Low House and Perkins and Sons Ship Chandlery on River Street.

At the Andrew Low House, the documented layer comes first on the operator's page: a John Norris–designed mansion combining Grecian and Italian Villa styles, with celebrated ironwork balconies. The folklore layer follows, and it is reported as folklore: the company says there have long been reports of spirits inhabiting the home, tales of staff seeing apparitions dressed in old-fashioned clothes and furniture moving with no one occupying it, alongside modern experiences related by the house's docents. Guests walk the halls at night and, in the operator's phrase, "experience it for yourself."

The second stop works the city's other haunted register — the working riverfront. Perkins and Sons Ship Chandlery stands on River Street, which the company calls the paranormal epicentre of the city — its claim, attributed — and describes the chandlery as a testament to the bustling port business that once took place at its doorstep. Inside, the tour leans into the dark tales of River Street's past.

Tickets for the Savannah tour were listed on the company's page at $37.05 to $38.00 at the time of research; confirm current pricing, dates and pickup details on the business's own website.
